Non-invasive, effective, physician supported treatment option for urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is a common issue affecting millions of Canadians, and can disrupt daily life and well-being. The two main types are stress urinary incontinence, which is when leaks happen during activities like coughing or exercising, and urgency incontinence (overactive bladder), which is when leaks happen with a sudden urge to urinate. Some women experience a mix of both types.

Incontinence is linked to childbirth, aging, and genetics. Treatment options include regular urinating, incontinence products, weight loss, quitting smoking, treatment of constipation, and pelvic floor exercises. Electromagnetic stimulation is a safe and effective way to get the benefits of pelvic floor exercises.

About Electromagnetic Stimulation

For Urinary Incontinence

  • What is it?

High intensity focused electromagnetic stimulation (sometimes called HIFEM) uses a magnet to strength the nerves and muscles that control urinary incontinence. This is quick, safe and effective way to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and reduce embarassing urinary leakage.

  • What device do you use?

We have carefully selected the FREEDOM+™ Integrative Solution with the Vitality seat. This is the newest option for delivering strengthening contractions to the pelvic floor in order to reduce urinary incontinence. It can deliver 25,000 supramaximal pelvic floor contractions in 30 minutes!

  • How do you get the treatments?

You will first attend an appointment to meet with clinic staff who will obtain some background information. You will be able to try the FREEDOM+ vitality seat, and decide if it is the right option for you. The full treatment usually last for 30 minutes, and normally you would attend 6 treatments over the course of 3-4 weeks. It simply involves sitting in the chair, and reading a book, listening to music or streaming on your phone! You are not required to undergo any invasive exams, and you remain fully clothed for the treatments. You have control over the stimulation strength to ensure a personlised experience.

  • Does it actually work?

The short answer is yes! As physicians, we believe in offering treatments with clinical studies supporting their use. But don’t take our word for it. This study looked at all the different studies available on HIFEM, and found that this treatment reduces urinary leakage, and improves urinary symptoms and people’s quality of life.

  • How much does it cost?

The initial appointment for the clinic visit and trial of HIFEM is $50. If you go ahead and book a treatment, this amount is credited to the program you select. Treatment plan prices vary based on your goals. For example, a 6 treatment package is currently available for $1000. We are able to offer this introductary price that is lower than other providers as we keep our overhead low, and focus solely on providing the most effective and efficient treatment.

  • Do I still need to do Kegel exercises?

Doing kegel exercises is great, and can complement the HIFEM treatment. Randomised clinical trials have shown that HIFEM treatment works just as well as pelvic floor exerices.

What is different about HIFEM is that it offers a way to get the benefit of Kegel exercies quickly, and is perfect for people who have trouble doing kegels, finding the time to do them, or remembering to do them!

  • Does this treatment work for men as well?

HIFEM has not been as well studied in men, however preliminary studies have shown that it can be effective. As urologists (the physicians who specialise in the treatment of prostate cancer) we are pleased to offer this treatment to men who have had prostate cancer and are struggling with urinary incontinence. In addition, men with other conditions causing urinary incontinence may benefit from treatment.

  • What are some other benefits?

Some people find that sexual function improves with HIFEM treatment, although that is not as well studied. If core strength is part of your goal, we can use some of the treatment time to help support abdominal strength and toning using the same technology.

  • People who shouldn't use HIFEM

    2. People with an implanted pacemaker, defibrillator, neurostimulator, or other implanted electronic device.
